What they do

A bump stop, or jounce bumper, catches the suspension at the end of its travel and dissipates the energy before the frame does. A good one is progressive: soft at first contact so the hit is not felt in the cabin, then firm enough to prevent bottoming out.

Why cast urethane

Progressive rate comes from geometry and material working together. Cast urethane lets a designer use hollows, ribs, and tapers that would be impossible in rubber compression molding, and the material itself has a naturally rising rate under compression. It also survives thousands of full-travel hits without cracking, chunking, or taking a permanent set.
